Decomposition of dioxins in waste incineration flue gas using electron beams

Kojima, Takuji

Genshikaku Kenkyu, 48(5), p.53 - 61, 2003/12

Technology for Decomposition/detoxification of dioxins in waste incineration flue gas of 200$$^{circ}$$C was developed using a samll self-shielded electron accelerator(300keV, size: 3 $$times$$ 3 $$times$$ 3 m$$^{3}$$ including shirlding materials), which is not reqired to have legal the approval of the installation for ionizing irradiation gererator. Dioxin decomposition ratio, the dioxin concentration values before and after electron beam irradiation, is higher than 90%, one order lower than initial value, at absorbed doses higher than 15kGy. The result shows decomposition mechanism for dioxins and demonstrates that endocrine disrupter activity of the flue gas also decrease by irradiation. The contents of paper was the same as one presented in the 2nd meeting on small accelerators, entitled "Promotion of use of small accelerators---".

Environment purification technology using ionizing radiation

Kojima, Takuji

Hoshasen, 29(2), p.77 - 85, 2003/04

The radiation technologies for environment conservation are useful for purification of pollutants contained in flue gas or wastewater at very low concentration which is difficult to perform by conventional methods: removal using fine filter or charcoals and decomposition using catalysis at high temperature, etc. This paper reviews some examples of radiation application to removal of SO$$_2$$ and NO$$_x$$ from coal-combustion flue gases, decomposition of dioxin in gas emitted through the incinerator, decomposition of gaseous toxic volatile organic compounds in off gas, reuse of agricultural wastes.

Development of decomposition/detoxicifying technology of dioxins in waste incineration flue gases using electron beams

Kojima, Takuji

Hoshasen To Sangyo, (95), p.64 - 68, 2002/09

JAERI has developed decomposition/detoxicization technology of diozins in waste incineration flue gas using electron beams and actual 200$$^{circ}C$$ flue gas at Takahama clean center. The obtained results are as follows:(1) Ratio of concentrations before and after irradiation were about 50%, 80% and higher than 90%(goal) for absorbed doses of 3, 10, and higher than 14kGy. (2)Applicability of the obtained data with the scale-up ratio of about 6 was demonstrated for actual 4,000 m$$^{3}$$/h flue gases. (3)Toxicity as endocline-desruptor was checked using ELISA method and higher than 50% of such a toxicity was reduced from initial one by irradiation.(4) Diphenylether(DPE) or chloro-DPE having benzen-rings and ether bonds, were used as model compounds to clarify electron-beam decomposition mechanism detecting decomposition products at 200$$^{circ}$$C. Break of ether bonds and cleavage of benzen-rings can be occured mainly at the initial decoposition process of dioxins rather than dissociation of Cl base without destruction of dioxin structure.

10th International Conference of Air Pollution 2001 in Italy

Hirota, Koichi

Hoshasen To Sangyo, (92), p.76 - 79, 2001/12

The research on electron-beam treatment of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) was presented at 10th international conference of Air Pollution 2001 in Italy. The presentation referred to the decomposition products and active species that oxidize the aromatics and aliphatics. Also, the test facility for EB treatment of PCDD/F from MSWI was presented.

Electron-beam decomposition of PCDD/F in flue gas from municipal waste incinerator

Hirota, Koichi

Isotope News, (566), p.9 - 11, 2001/07

Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute has started the research on Electron-beam technology for decomposing more than 90 % of PCDD/D from MSWI in October of 2000. This test facility is operated till March of 2002. Then, this technology will be transferred to private companies after the feasibility study is completed.
